Request copies of certificates

Shropshire Registration Service can only issue certificate for events that took place in the Shropshire District after 1st July 1837.

We do not hold records for events that took place in the Telford and Wrekin area. Visit the Telford and Wrekin website to obtain your certificate if you were born in Telford or Wrekin.

Visit the GOV.UK website and use the online postcode checker if you are unsure where the event took place.

The Shropshire BMD online index can be used to check if we hold your certificate before you order. We cannot provide copy certificates for adoption or still birth records, these should be requested through the General Register Office at www.gro.gov.uk.

During your application you will be asked to provide the following details:

  • The full names at the time of the event for the certificate required.
  • The date of the event – You can provide a full date (e.g. 06/04/1970) or a quarter and year (e.g. January to March 1970).
  • The name of place where the event took place.

Certificates for Marriages that have recently taken place in a Religious Building

If you have recently married in a church or other religious building, you will need to apply here for a Marriage Certificate. Please note it can take up to 28 days for us to receive the paperwork from the person who conducted your ceremony. Your first order of certificates will be charged at £12.50 and sent to you by 2nd Class post. Any subsequent certificates ordered will be subject to our normal postal charges.

Terms and Conditions for ordering Certificates - Please Read

The Shropshire Registration Service can only supply certificates for birth, death, marriage and civil partnerships from records held by the Shropshire Registration Service. Certificates for events outside the Shropshire registration district including events that took place in the Telford and Wrekin area should be ordered from the register office in the appropriate district.

Certificate description

Certified copies of birth, death, marriage and civil partnership entries. A certificate will be supplied that is a copy from an original register or record held by the Shropshire registration service from July 1837 onwards.

The certificate may be printed, scanned image or handwritten depending on the format of the original entry. It will show all the details recorded in the entry.

Contact

You will need to provide a daytime phone number and also preferably an email address with your request. We will contact you if we are unable to find the entry. We are unable to make telephone calls to destinations outside of the UK.

Your order will be sent to the address provided at the time of ordering. We are unable to send certificates overseas and an alternative UK address must be provided.

Bronze Certificate Service

The application will be processed within 15 working days and will be sent out by First Class Royal Mail post.

Gold Certificate Service

Applications received before 11am Monday to Friday (excluding bank/public holidays) will be ready for collection between 3pm and 4pm on the same day from the Register Office, Shrewsbury.

Applications received after 11am will be processed and ready for collection between 3pm and 4pm on the following working day.

Refunds

Shropshire Council will refund the full cost of the certificate in the following circumstances, where:

  • the record is not held by our register office
  • the record is in the adopted children's register (held by the General Register Office)
  • the register entry does not match the information which you supplied on the application form and we are unable to supply the correct record (in these cases we require any issued certificate to be returned to us before we refund the fee)

When a certificate is issued which matches the information given by the applicant we will not provide a refund.

Cancellations

Once an order has been made it cannot be cancelled or a refund given unless one of the above three circumstances applies.

Lost Items

Shropshire Registration Service cannot accept liability for items lost by Royal Mail. If you have not received your certificate within 18 working days of your request, you will need to apply and pay for a replacement certificate.
